Stock Wrangler steering is engineered for factory tire sizes and on-road use. The moment you lift the Jeep, increase the tire size, or start wheeling seriously, the factory steering components are working harder than they were designed to. Bent tie rods, worn drag link ends, and track bar failures are predictable outcomes of an unupgraded steering system on a modified Wrangler. Here’s what to upgrade, why it matters, and what to look for when you shop.
Why Stock Steering Fails on Modified Wranglers
The factory tie rod and drag link on most Wranglers are made from relatively thin-walled tubing. This is fine for stock tires — the stress loads stay within the designed range. Add 35-inch tires (significantly more unsprung weight and rotational inertia) plus a 3-inch lift (changing all the geometry angles), and those components are now experiencing forces they weren’t rated for. Hit a rock, a deep pothole, or a high-speed trail obstacle, and the stock components bend.
A bent tie rod causes your tires to point in different directions, making the Jeep pull and wear tires rapidly. You’ll feel it as a persistent pull or a steering wheel that’s off-center even when driving straight. It’s a common occurrence on stock-steered Wranglers running 35s or larger.
The Track Bar
The track bar keeps the front axle centered under the Jeep laterally. When you lift the Jeep, the stock track bar angle changes — the axle shifts toward the driver side, which you can see as asymmetric clearance between tire and fender. A track bar correction bracket or an adjustable track bar restores proper axle centering and also corrects the bind angle on the bar.
For any lift over 1.5 inches, an adjustable or geometry-correcting track bar is worth doing. The stock track bar works under these conditions, but the angle causes increased stress on the bushing ends, contributing to wear and death wobble over time.
Heavy-duty aftermarket track bars are typically DOM or chromoly steel with heavy-wall construction and quality rebuildable end joints rather than rubber bushings. Brands like Synergy, JKS, and TeraFlex all make well-regarded options.
The Tie Rod and Drag Link
The tie rod connects left and right wheels, maintaining parallel alignment. The drag link runs from the steering box to the passenger-side tie rod end, translating steering input to axle movement. Both need to be upgraded together — upgrading only one leaves the other as the new weak link.
Aftermarket tie rod and drag link sets come in two main varieties:
- Heavy-duty direct replacement: Same geometry as stock, but made from thicker DOM tube with larger, higher-quality rod ends. Good for builds up to 35s with moderate wheeling.
- High-clearance design: The tube bends up and over the axle for additional ground clearance. Significantly more resistant to rock damage underneath. Better for aggressive builds on 37s and up.
For serious wheeling, the high-clearance design is worth the premium. A rock impact on a standard tie rod that runs low across the axle can bend it. A high-clearance tie rod that arcs upward has less exposure to the same rocks.
Flip Kit for Drag Link Angle
On lifted Jeeps, the steering drag link can develop a significant downward angle from the steering box to the tie rod. This angle contributes to bump steer — the front wheels turning slightly when you hit bumps, making the Jeep wander. A drag link flip kit inverts the relationship, bringing the drag link up to the top of the knuckle instead of the bottom, which corrects the caster and angle and reduces bump steer on many lifted applications.
Power Steering Considerations
The JK and TJ Wrangler use hydraulic power steering with a recirculating ball steering box. The weak points in the hydraulic system on lifted, larger-tired Wranglers are the stock steering box (which can develop a loose sector shaft from the increased stress of bigger tires) and the pump (which gets taxed harder). An add-a-leaf or steering box brace helps prevent the box from flexing in the frame mount under hard steering loads. On extreme builds, a hydraulic steering assist (ram assist) can be added, but this is reserved for serious rock crawlers with very large tires where the factory hydraulics are genuinely insufficient.

Upgraded steering is a safety upgrade, not just a performance one. A bent tie rod mid-trail means a slow crawl out and a tow home. A broken drag link at highway speed is dangerous. Investing in heavy-duty steering components when you go to 35s or add a meaningful lift is the right time — before the stock components fail, not after.
