Lockers are the single biggest off-road capability upgrade you can add to a Jeep Wrangler. A limited-slip differential or open diff lets one wheel spin when traction is lost. A locker forces both wheels on an axle to turn at the same speed — meaning if one wheel has grip, power goes to it. The difference on the trail is massive. Understanding the types, their tradeoffs, and what makes sense for your build will help you make a smart investment.
How a Differential Works (and Why Open Diffs Fall Short Off-Road)
An open differential allows each wheel on an axle to spin at different speeds — necessary for cornering. But off-road, the open diff routes torque to the wheel with the least resistance. Lift one wheel off the ground, and all your engine’s torque goes to the floating wheel. The axle with traction gets nothing. This is why a stock Wrangler can get stuck on seemingly easy terrain — one wheel spinning in the air while the grounded wheel sits still.
Types of Lockers
Air Lockers (ARB, OX)
Air lockers use compressed air to engage and disengage a locking collar inside the differential. When you flip the switch, a ring locks both axle shafts to the carrier — both wheels must now turn together. Flip it off, and the locker opens, allowing normal differential action for on-road driving.
ARB is the market leader and has been installed in Jeep axles since the 1990s. Installation requires running a small air line from a compressor (often an ARB twin-motor compressor mounted in the engine bay) to each axle. The install is involved but reliable when done properly.
Pros: Fully controllable — locked when you want it, open when you don’t. Works in front and rear. Extremely durable.
Cons: Most expensive ($600–$900 per locker plus compressor). Installation complexity. Air lines running under the Jeep can be damaged off-road.
Electronic Lockers (Eaton E-Locker, OX E-Locker)
E-lockers use an electric motor or solenoid to engage the locking mechanism rather than air. They’re simpler to install (no air lines or compressor) and work reliably. The Eaton E-Locker is the standard factory locker on Rubicon models and is also available as an aftermarket upgrade.
Pros: No compressor needed. Cleaner install. Rubicon-spec reliability.
Cons: Slightly slower engagement than air. Electronic components can be vulnerable to water and mud long-term. $500–$800 per locker.
Selectable vs Auto-Lockers
Both air and e-lockers are selectable — you choose when to lock. Auto-lockers (like the Detroit Locker and Lock-Right) are always locked and ratchet to allow differentiation during turns. They provide full-time locker capability without switches or controls, but they affect on-road handling — you’ll feel a clicking or hopping in tight turns as the locker ratchets. This is normal and not harmful, but it’s noticeable and not comfortable for daily driving.
Lunch Box Lockers (Lock-Right, Aussie Locker)
Lunch box lockers install into the existing differential carrier without replacing it — they fit “inside the lunchbox.” These are the cheapest locker option ($150–$300) and install in a few hours with basic tools. They’re auto-lockers — always engaged.
On a trail-only rig, lunch box lockers in both axles give you excellent capability at a fraction of the cost of selectable lockers. On a daily driver, the on-road behavior is acceptable in the rear but can make the front axle feel unpredictable — most builds use a selectable locker in front and a lunch box in the rear, or full selectable lockers if the budget allows.
Front vs Rear: Which First?
Always lock the rear first if you’re doing one axle at a time. The rear locker provides the majority of the off-road benefit — it’s where most of the traction load sits on climbs. A rear locker alone transforms Wrangler capability. Adding a front locker on top of a locked rear is the step that takes a good trail Jeep to an excellent one, allowing you to crawl through situations that would stop a rear-only locked Jeep.

- Dana 30 front: ARB, Eaton E-Locker, Lock-Right, Aussie Locker — all available
- Dana 44 front (Rubicon): ARB, Eaton E-Locker available
- Dana 35 rear: Not recommended; the axle shafts break before the locker helps you. Upgrade the axle first.

Rear locker only (lunch box, DIY): $150–$300 parts, 3–4 hours labor
Rear air locker with compressor: $900–$1,400 installed
Front and rear air lockers: $2,000–$3,200 installed with twin-motor compressor
Front and rear e-lockers: $1,500–$2,500 installed
Lockers are the upgrade that other Wrangler owners notice on the trail before they notice your lift or tires. A properly locked Jeep on 33s will go places that a stock Rubicon on 37s can’t reach. Invest in lockers early in your build — you’ll use them every single time you go off-road.
