Airing down your tires before hitting the trail and airing back up before returning to the highway is one of the most impactful off-road techniques you can use. Lower tire pressure significantly improves traction on rock, sand, and loose terrain by increasing the tire’s contact patch and allowing it to conform to the surface. But airing down only makes sense if you have a reliable way to air back up — and that means having the right air source on the Jeep.
Why You Need On-Board Air
At a trailhead, you air down from 32–35 psi to 15–20 psi for rocky terrain, or as low as 8–12 psi on sand. That’s removing a lot of air from large tires. Getting it back in at the end of the trail with a small handheld pump is a 30-minute exercise in frustration. A capable on-board compressor does it in 5–8 minutes per tire. It also lets you air down and back up mid-trail if conditions change, which you’d never bother doing with a slow pump.
Option 1: Portable 12V Compressor

Option 2: Mounted Under-Hood Compressor
A permanently mounted compressor is the right solution for any serious build. The ARB twin-motor compressor is the benchmark — it’s used in ARB air locker systems and is also useful for airing tires. It mounts in the engine bay, draws power directly from the battery, and is always there when you need it. When you need air — whether for tires or air-actuated tools — you draw from the tank rather than waiting for the compressor to build pressure.
For ARB air locker users, the air tank also ensures the lockers engage instantly on demand rather than waiting for the compressor to cycle. Small 1-gallon tanks from Viair or generic sources run $40–$80 and plumb into any standard air system with push-lock fittings.
Option 4: CO2 Tank
A CO2 tank is the fastest way to air up tires — faster than any compressor. A 5-pound CO2 cylinder can inflate four 35-inch tires to trail pressure in under 3 minutes total. The tank is small, quiet, and has no moving parts to fail. The downside: finite supply. When the CO2 runs out, you need a refill at a welding supply shop or paintball store. A 5-pound cylinder runs $50–$80 to purchase, and a refill costs $20–$30.
CO2 is popular for desert and sand use — no overheating, fast, reliable. For areas with limited supply access (remote mountain trails), a compressor that can be powered by the vehicle indefinitely is more practical.
Tire Inflation Accessories Worth Having
Whatever air source you choose, you need a good pressure gauge and an inflation gun or hose with a locking chuck that stays on the valve stem without requiring you to hold it. Cheap plastic-chuck inflators fall off constantly — buy a metal lock-on style. A dual-foot gauge (0–60 psi, analog) gives you fast, accurate readings in any lighting. Carry a small brass deflation tool for airing down quickly.
What to Buy
For a daily driver with occasional trail use: a quality portable compressor like the Viair 400P ($120–$180) stores in a bag and handles the job without a permanent install. For a dedicated trail vehicle with air lockers or frequent off-road use: an ARB twin motor ($350–$450) mounted under the hood is the right investment.
