When Jeep introduced the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder eTorque mild hybrid in the JL Wrangler in 2018, it polarized the Jeep community. Here was a turbocharged four-banger in a body-on-frame off-road vehicle known for its naturally aspirated V6. Four years in, there’s enough real-world data to give an honest comparison. If you’re buying a used JL or ordering new, here’s what actually matters.
The Specs
3.6L Pentastar V6: 285 hp, 260 lb-ft torque. Natural aspiration, no hybrid components. This engine is also in the Gladiator, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango, and Ram 1500 in various tunes. It has millions of miles of documented reliability across multiple vehicles.
2.0L Turbocharged I4 eTorque: 270 hp, 295 lb-ft torque. The eTorque system adds a 48-volt mild hybrid belt-starter-generator (BSG) that provides up to 44 lb-ft of additional torque assist at launch and during low-speed operation. On paper, more torque than the V6 at low RPM where you use it most off-road.
Real-World Performance
The 2.0T feels strong around town and during highway acceleration. The eTorque assist fills in the low-rpm range where a turbocharged engine would normally have lag. Off-road, the 295 lb-ft of torque at lower RPM gives it an advantage crawling rocks — more torque available at idle-speed conditions is exactly what technical terrain demands.
The 3.6L V6 is smoother and more linear in its power delivery. It doesn’t have the eTorque’s instantaneous torque hit, but it pulls consistently from a much wider RPM range. Many long-time Jeep drivers prefer its predictability and the confidence that comes from a proven, high-mileage engine architecture.
Fuel Economy
EPA ratings: 2.0T gets 22 city / 24 highway vs 3.6L at 17/23. Real-world results show the 2.0T does better in city driving (where eTorque assist and stop-start actually help) but the advantage narrows significantly on the highway and disappears completely with a lift and tires. Add 35s to either engine and fuel economy drops substantially for both — the aerodynamics and rolling resistance of larger tires impact economy more than the engine choice does.
Reliability Concerns
The 3.6L Pentastar has a long track record with known, documented issues: the water pump can fail (it’s internal, driven by the timing chain), the rocker arm assembly has had some issues on earlier production years, and cam phaser wear has been reported at higher mileages. All known, all relatively affordable to address.
The 2.0T is newer and has less long-term data. The specific concerns raised by owners include:
- eTorque BSG system: The mild hybrid belt-starter-generator adds complexity. The 48V system includes a separate battery that requires replacement. Replacement cost is $1,500–$2,500 depending on the shop.
- Turbo longevity: Turbocharged engines run hotter and require more meticulous maintenance — especially oil changes. The 2.0T requires 0W-20 full synthetic and on-schedule oil changes. Skip oil changes and turbo wear accelerates.
- eTorque disconnect issues: Some early 2.0T owners reported eTorque system faults requiring BSG replacement under warranty. This is less common post-2020 as Jeep resolved early production issues.
Modification Considerations
For a heavily modified Wrangler with a lift and big tires, the 3.6L V6 is generally preferred. Here’s why:
- The 3.6L has a broader aftermarket support ecosystem — tune options, intake upgrades, headers
- Turbocharged engines are more sensitive to heat under sustained load (extended low-speed hill climbing in summer). The 2.0T’s cooling system and turbo both work harder in these conditions.
- The eTorque system adds electrical complexity that aftermarket modifications can sometimes conflict with
- The eTorque mild hybrid provides the most benefit in daily driving scenarios — its advantage is reduced on trails where the BSG’s operating parameters aren’t always met
Which to Buy
For a daily driver with moderate off-road use and standard tire sizes: the 2.0T is a legitimate choice. The fuel economy advantage is real in city driving, the torque numbers are genuine, and if maintained properly, long-term reliability should be fine.
For a build vehicle with 35s or larger, a lift, and serious trail use: the 3.6L V6 is the safer long-term choice. Proven architecture, simpler system, broader aftermarket support, and no turbocharged heat management concerns during extended low-speed off-road use.
Neither engine is bad. The 2.0T is more modern and efficient. The 3.6L is more proven and simpler. Know your use case and choose accordingly.
